About Chiropractic

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors are highly trained on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with an emphasis on treatments which include, joint manipulation, patient education, physical therapy modalities, manual therapy, nutrition and rehabilitation exercises. Chiropractic adjustments involve qualified practitioners applying, using their hands or a small instrument, specific and controlled thrust to a spinal joint to improve the movement of the spine as well as your body’s physical function.

Is seeing a chiropractor necessary?

Chiropractic care is highly regarded for its scientifically proven results in treating/ helping with back pain, neck pain, headaches, bad posture, sciatica and certain/many other conditions. It is also important to note that chiropractic care can provide practical preventative care to optimise a person’s overall health and wellbeing.

What qualifications should a chiropractor hold?

Your Chiropractor should have completed a 5 – year full time degree or postgraduate master’s course recognised by the General Chiropractic Council.

What training and regulation do chiropractors adhere to?

In the UK, chiropractic is a regulated profession. In common with medical practitioners and dentists, all chiropractors are registered by law under the Chiropractors Act 1994, and the title ‘Chiropractor’ is protected under this legislation. The profession is statutorily regulated through the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and it is illegal to practice as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.

Treatment

Will I be treated at my first visit?

If indicated as safe and necessary, the chiropractor may decide (at their discretion) to adjust on your first visit. However, this is not a normal practice.

How long does each treatment takes?

Typically, the initial consultation takes about 30 minutes while an adjustment takes about 5 – 15 minutes. Occasionally, these sessions may be extended as the need arises depending on your body’s condition and needs.

How long does it take to get better?

Every patients’ condition and experience are unique, so the healing time for each patient will be unique as well. Your recovery is dependent on many factors such as age, the extent and length of time you have had the problem, the ability of your body in adapting to the change chiropractic has introduced (your body’s ability to recover), as well as your own commitment to any rehabilitative exercises and follow-up treatments which your chiropractor may recommend. Chiropractors do not just focus on pain management, they also focus on fixing the root cause of your pain, so that it does not return in the future. Typically, you should expect to see some pain relief within the first few treatments. However, depending on the level of health and quality of life you want to achieve, chiropractic care could be long term.

Does the treatment hurt?

Nothing a chiropractor do should hurt you and there should not be any pain during a chiropractic adjustment. Treatment procedures are chosen specifically for each patient, taking into consideration the patient’s comfort, condition and state of progress. Most of our patients love being adjusted and experience no pain at all. However, if you have a chronic complaint or if you are suffering from acute muscle spasms, you may experience non-persistent slight discomfort because structural changes are being introduced to parts of your body that have been fixed/stuck for a long time. Post-treatment soreness may be common in some as your body is adjusting to the change.

Is chiropractic treatment safe, even if I've already had surgery?

There is a misconception that you can no longer visit a chiropractor for care after you had a spinal surgery. In fact, specific chiropractic care may be beneficial for these people. In pre-surgery cases, early treatment can prevent serious invasive intervention, and if necessary, your chiropractor is trained to recognise conditions which need to be referred elsewhere. Chiropractic care is also extremely safe in post-surgery cases. Spinal surgery may cause improper alignment and extreme muscle stiffness that precise chiropractic care may be able to resolve. Recommendation will be given on a case by case basis during your consultation with our chiropractors.

Specific Condition

Can I see a chiropractor if I’m pregnant?

Absolutely. Many pregnant ladies have reported improvement in posture and spinal conditions from chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Am I too old for chiropractic care?

Age really is no barrier! Treatment is safe for people of any age; procedures differ for the very young, those with bone disease such as osteoporosis and the elderly.

Is Chiropractic just for ‘bad backs’?

Chiropractors treat all types of back and neck issues, general aches and pains including those of joints, muscle spasms or cramps, frozen shoulder and tennis elbow arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck. They also treat joint pain including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis, alongside core osteoarthritis treatments and exercise. Chiropractic can also help with headaches secondary to neck problems and prevention of migraine type headaches.

Fees & Insurance

Can I claim money back on my Private Healthcare Scheme?

Most healthcare schemes cover chiropractic treatments, either to address both ongoing and initial care.

How much is a chiropractor in UK?

Most people who have chiropractic treatment pay for it privately. It usually costs around £30 to £80 per session. You do not need to see a GP before making an appointment.
